UTRGV Athletics Unveils Vaqueros Sports Network Through Partnership with Radio United

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has announced a significant milestone in its commitment to enhancing the community’s sports culture with the launch of the Vaqueros Sports Network, thanks to a partnership with Radio United. By broadcasting UTRGV football games on Ultra 90.1 FM and Pure Country 95.7 FM, this initiative aims to connect with the Rio Grande Valley and extend its reach into Laredo.

Starting this season, all home and away UTRGV football games will be aired on these stations, with coverage kicking off 30 minutes prior to each game. Fans will also have access to the broadcasts via the Radio Para Mi App in the UTRGV Vaqueros section, underscoring the platform’s adaptability to modern listening preferences.

Chasse Conque, UTRGV’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, expressed enthusiasm for this partnership, stating, “We are excited to be able to start building out the Vaqueros Sports Network with stations in two regions that are important to our university.” This initiative not only fosters a stronger connection with fans but highlights UTRGV’s commitment to expanding its educational and athletic offerings across Texas.

### UTRGV Expansion in Laredo

In tandem with the launch of the Vaqueros Sports Network, UTRGV is also expanding its academic programs in Laredo. This fall, the university will introduce a Master of Education in Counseling degree, alongside an existing bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science, aiming to bolster educational opportunities in the Gateway City. This extension aligns with UTRGV’s broader mission to enhance community engagement and educational access throughout the region.

The partnership with the UT Education and Research Center has already resulted in the introduction of a Bachelor of Social Work and a Master of Science in Social Work. Furthermore, a joint admission agreement with Laredo College aims to facilitate smoother transitions for students planning to pursue further education at UTRGV.

### Radio United and Its Role

Radio United plays a crucial role in this initiative. Ultra 90.1 FM is a well-established adult contemporary station that serves a demographic largely composed of adults aged 25 to 54, boasting a wide coverage area that includes the entire Rio Grande Valley. Similarly, Pure Country 95.7 FM reaches audiences in Laredo and beyond with a blend of contemporary and classic country music.

Radio United’s CEO, Romeo Herrera, shared sentiments of pride in his network’s support, emphasizing its goal of fostering a strong sports spirit within the next generation. He stated, “Together, we are a stronger and greater RGV,” reinforcing the collaborative approach to cultural and community growth in this vibrant region.

### Broadcast Team

The seasoned broadcast team overseeing UTRGV’s radio coverage of football games will feature Joe Bowling and Jonathan Medina. With over 40 years of experience, Bowling is an integral voice in local sports broadcasting. Known for his dynamic play-by-play commentary, he previously contributed to various outlets and has a wealth of experience covering significant sporting events.

Jonathan Medina, initially hailing from Rio Hondo and a former NCAA Division I athlete, brings a unique perspective to the broadcast team. His experience not only as a player but also as a motivational speaker equips him to engage and inspire the listening audience. His collaborative history with Bowling offers a promising foundation for the broadcasts, enhancing the overall listener experience.

### Engaging the Community

As UTRGV and Radio United work together to launch the Vaqueros Sports Network, community involvement remains a priority. In addition to enhancing listeners’ engagement with athletics, the partnership presents sponsorship opportunities for local businesses wishing to support their local teams and become part of the sports narrative in the Rio Grande Valley.

Listeners are encouraged to learn more about sponsorship opportunities via UTRGV’s official website, helping to ensure that their sports community thrives.

### Conclusion

The unveiling of the Vaqueros Sports Network marks a significant leap forward for UTRGV Athletics and the greater Rio Grande Valley community. By collaborating with Radio United to provide extensive, accessible football broadcasts while simultaneously expanding academic programs, UTRGV exemplifies its commitment to building an enriched cultural and educational environment.

With seasoned broadcasters at the helm and a dedication to community engagement, UTRGV is poised to create a lasting impact through sports, fostering connections among fans and enhancing the sense of unity across the region.
