On June 6, educators from across Central Texas congregated in Temple, Texas, to attend an enlightening conference centered on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom. Organised by Temple Independent School District (TISD), this engaging event aimed at equipping teachers with the tools and knowledge necessary to leverage AI effectively in their educational practices.
The AI Literacy Arcade: Push to Start Conference brought together nearly 120 educators representing six different Central Texas school districts. Through this initiative, Temple ISD’s digital learning department sought to foster an environment where teachers could explore the transformative potential of AI in enhancing teaching and learning experiences.
The conference catered specifically to teachers, placing a spotlight on the practical applications of AI in the classroom. Breakout sessions explored a plethora of topics, including effective strategies to “breathe life” into lessons using AI, empowering students through responsible use of generative AI, and providing educators with an AI starter pack to launch their own explorations into this rapidly evolving field. The sessions also provided insights into various AI resources and tools available for classroom implementation.
Importantly, TISD aimed to promote proactive integration of AI into educational practices. Educators were encouraged to think ahead, focusing on how they could incorporate AI into their lesson plans and classroom management, rather than simply reacting to the technology’s emergence. “We are thrilled to bring together educators for the AI Literacy Arcade,” shared Ashley Jones, director of digital learning for Temple schools. “This event is designed to equip teachers with practical strategies, innovative tools, and a deeper understanding of how AI can enhance learning experiences, foster student creativity, and streamline their own work.”
The conference featured a keynote address from Lori Roberts of FriED Technology, who shared valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities surrounding AI in education. Additionally, vendor booths allowed educators to familiarize themselves with technologies offered by leading companies such as MagicSchool, PowerSchool, and Edmentum, further enhancing the learning experience.
TISD has made significant strides in educating its staff about AI’s rapid evolution. By hosting this conference, the district contributes not only to its own educators’ development but to a broader dialogue about AI in education. The initiative underscores TISD’s commitment to nurturing a forward-thinking educational environment.
In April, TISD hosted a parent meeting focused on the integration of AI in education, which introduced the district’s AI framework and guiding principles. Sessions were held on student monitoring, AI awareness, and tools available to support families in navigating the emergent landscape of AI technologies. This illustrates TISD’s dedication to ensuring that parents are informed and involved as AI progressively shapes educational practices.
“The developments in artificial intelligence are happening faster than the average human can keep up with,” acknowledged Dr. Renota Rogers, the chief academic officer for Temple schools. “It’s exciting that Temple ISD can host this conference to equip educators and leaders from across our region. As a district, we are committed to being forward-thinking and leading the way in preparing our teachers and students to navigate the changes and opportunities that AI brings to the educational landscape.”
The retro video game theme of the conference provided a light-hearted backdrop to the serious discussions taking place throughout the day. As TISD partnered with neighboring districts—Belton ISD, Copperas Cove ISD, Killeen ISD, Troy ISD, and Goldthwaite ISD—the collaborative spirit fostered an engaging atmosphere ripe for creative exchanges.
Following this successful event, several TISD presenters are set to contribute their insights at an upcoming AI conference hosted by Education Service Center Region 12 later this month. This continued commitment to professional development in AI signifies the district’s focus on remaining at the forefront of educational innovation and the responsible integration of advanced technologies in teaching.
The educational landscape is changing, and as AI technology continues to advance, conferences such as the AI Literacy Arcade are crucial in empowering educators with the knowledge and tools they need. By fostering collaboration and sharing best practices, TISD is not only preparing its own staff but also contributing to a broader understanding of AI’s role in education.
With its proactive stance on AI literacy, Temple ISD is paving the way for a future where educators and students alike can thrive in a world increasingly shaped by cutting-edge technologies. As we move forward, fostering awareness and knowledge of AI in the classroom will be crucial in ensuring that both educators and students are equipped to harness the potential of these transformative tools in creating enriched learning experiences.
