On June 6, educators from across Central Texas congregated in Temple, Texas, to attend an enlightening conference centered on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom. Organised by Temple Independent School District (TISD), this engaging event aimed at equipping teachers with the tools and knowledge necessary to leverage AI effectively in their educational practices.
The AI Literacy Arcade: Push to Start Conference brought together nearly 120 educators representing six different Central Texas school districts. Through this initiative, Temple ISD’s digital learning department sought to foster an environment where teachers could explore the transformative potential of AI in enhancing teaching and learning experiences.
The conference catered specifically to teachers, placing a spotlight on the practical applications of AI in the classroom. Breakout sessions explored a plethora of topics, including effective strategies to “breathe life” into lessons using AI, empowering students through responsible use of generative AI, and providing educators with an AI starter pack to launch their own explorations into this rapidly evolving field. The sessions also provided insights into various AI resources and tools available for classroom implementation.
Importantly, TISD aimed to promote proactive integration of AI into educational practices. Educators were encouraged to think ahead, focusing on how they could incorporate AI into their lesson plans and classroom management, rather than simply reacting to the technology’s emergence. “We are thrilled to bring together educators for the AI Literacy Arcade,” shared Ashley Jones, director of digital learning for Temple schools. “This event is designed to equip teachers with practical strategies, innovative tools, and a deeper understanding of how AI can enhance learning experiences, foster student creativity, and streamline their own work.”
The conference featured a keynote address from Lori Roberts of FriED Technology, who shared valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities surrounding AI in education. Additionally, vendor booths allowed educators to familiarize themselves with technologies offered by leading companies such as MagicSchool, PowerSchool, and Edmentum, further enhancing the learning experience.
TISD has made significant strides in educating its staff about AI’s rapid evolution. In April, TISD hosted a parent meeting focused on the integration of AI in education, which introduced the district’s AI framework and guiding principles. As TISD partnered with neighboring districts—Belton ISD, Copperas Cove ISD, Killeen ISD, Troy ISD, and Goldthwaite ISD—the collaborative spirit fostered an engaging atmosphere ripe for creative exchanges.
Following this successful event, several TISD presenters are set to contribute their insights at an upcoming AI conference hosted by Education Service Center Region 12 later this month.
