Rey Mysterio Shares Unfortunate Update Amid WWE Hiatus

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio has recently opened up about his ongoing struggles with injuries, specifically revealing the unfortunate circumstances that led to his withdrawal from WrestleMania 41 earlier this year. Initially scheduled to face “El Grande Americano” Chad Gable, Mysterio was unable to compete due to a painful groin injury sustained during a six-man tag team match on April 18, 2025, on SmackDown.

In a heartfelt interview with Jim Varsallone, the 50-year-old lucha libre icon disclosed that his injuries extend beyond the groin area. “No, not easy (to stay on top in the wrestling industry),” Mysterio stated, reflecting on the physical toll that years in the ring have taken. He elaborated, “I’m actually recovering from one that I just had right before WrestleMania. A torn groin and a busted eardrum.”

Despite experiencing such significant setbacks, Mysterio’s passion for wrestling shines through. “I still love doing what I do. I definitely believe that I picked up my second wind when my son started to wrestle,” he explained. His journey in wrestling began at a young age, and the recent involvement of his son has rekindled his love for the sport. Mysterio mentioned that his son has been part of the wrestling scene since he was just seven years old, notably when they had a storyline with Eddie Guerrero involving the custody of Dominik.

Mysterio attributes his ongoing resilience and drive to the deep connections he has formed over the years. “But overall, the passion that I have for the sport—I wanna consider myself a peacemaker,” he shared, highlighting his desire to maintain positive relationships with colleagues and fans alike. “I don’t have any problems, at least I don’t think I do, with any of my colleagues, with my fans around the world. I like to connect, and in some way, that keeps me pushing forward and loving what I’ve been doing for the past three, four years, or should I say from the age of four when I started training.”

This connection with WWE fans continues to serve as a powerful motivator for Mysterio. He remarked on the strong bond he shares with his audience, stating, “So, the connection is definitely still there; I enjoy doing it. I enjoy watching my son.” The diversity of WWE’s fanbase and the opportunity to travel globally to engage with them has transformed his experience in wrestling into something extraordinary. “The love and support that they show is like no other,” he stated.

Following his injuries, Mysterio underwent surgery to repair a torn abductor muscle. This unfortunate situation resulted in WWE scrapping a unique entrance planned for him at WrestleMania 41, where Rey Fenix had to step in as his replacement to face Chad Gable. As of now, the exact timeline for Mysterio’s return to the ring remains uncertain as he focuses on recovery.

As fans eagerly await his comeback, Mysterio’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience and passion that drives professional wrestlers. Despite facing tough physical challenges, the love of the sport and the connections with fans and family continue to inspire him.
