The City of Lincoln’s Parks and Recreation Department recently opened registration for its highly anticipated fall team sports. This exciting development offers various options, catering to both adults and youth, and aims to foster community involvement through sports. Whether you’re looking to engage in friendly competition or enjoy some recreational play, there’s something for everyone.
For adults aged 18 and older, the department has laid out an array of options. Participants can sign up for coed volleyball, kickball, and softball leagues. Additionally, youth from kindergarten through eighth grade can engage in NFL Flag football, providing a fantastic opportunity for younger athletes to learn the ropes of teamwork and sportsmanship.
One of the highlights of the fall offerings is adult volleyball, which features both coed and women’s leagues. Coed matches will take place on Thursday nights, while women’s leagues are scheduled for Mondays. Each team can expect an eight-game regular season culminating in a double-elimination tournament. The season runs from September 4 through late November, hosted at the Calvert Recreation Center located on Stockwell Street. The fees are quite reasonable, with an early registration period from July 7 to July 13 costing $311 per team. Afterward, the regular rate of $322 applies, with the final registration deadline set for August 10.
Next up is the adult slow-pitch softball league, which includes recreational and competitive coed teams, as well as men’s leagues. This league features a six-week season followed by a single-elimination tournament, providing ample opportunities for teams to showcase their skills. Games are scheduled to begin on August 10 at various fields, including Mahoney, Holmes, and Ballard. The regular registration fee of $306 per team until July 13 will increase to $328 for late registrants, with the deadline set for July 20.
Another fun option for adults is kickball, which has garnered popularity over the years. Scheduled for Sundays at the Lewis ballfield complex, this league includes both competitive and recreational formats. Teams will compete over a six-game season from mid-August through October, with a single-elimination tournament providing an exciting conclusion to the season. The cost to participate in this league is $253 per team, and the registration deadline is also July 20. Teams should consist of at least ten players to ensure adequate participation.
Turning our focus to youth activities, the youth NFL flag football program allows children from kindergarten through eighth grade to engage in five-on-five games. This structured approach not only promotes physical activity but also instills essential skills like teamwork and communication. Scheduled from August 18 through mid-October, games will occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at the Densmore ballfields. The registration fees are $98 for the first child, with a discounted rate of $93 for additional siblings. Late registration, occurring from July 15 through July 21, involves a slight increase, necessitating a fee of $108 for the first child and $103 for each sibling. Importantly, need-based scholarships are available to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate.
Monica Manning, the Team Sports Supervisor, emphasizes the community-building aspect of these leagues: “Team sports are a great opportunity for friends, coworkers, and church groups to play a fun and friendly sport recreationally or competitively, having a good time together for a night out.” Her words capture the spirit of what these events aim to achieve—creating connections and shared experiences that go beyond just the game itself.
In addition to the players, the Parks and Recreation Department is also seeking officials and referees for the leagues. Positions are available to help officiate games, with compensation of $26 per game. This can be an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to be actively involved in the sporting community while earning some extra income.
For those interested in signing up, online registration is available at teamsideline.com/lincolnne. Participants are encouraged to register early to take advantage of discounted rates and ensure their spot in the league of their choice.
