The Olympia & Beyond Sports Commission, part of Experience Olympia & Beyond, recently hosted the 8th Annual Thurston County Sports Awards on June 4 at South Puget Sound Community College. This celebration recognized the significant contributions of local athletes, coaches, and sports figures, honoring 40 individuals and two teams across seven categories. The event underscored the dedication and impact these sports figures have on the Thurston County sports community.

One notable highlight from the evening was the Collegiate Sports Star of the Year award. Emmanuel Nicasio of The Evergreen State College was recognized for his exceptional performance in men’s sports, boasting six goals and four assists in the 2024 season, earning him a position on the First Team for the All-Cascade Collegiate Conference. His achievements reflect not only his talent but also the spirit of perseverance that characterizes athletes in Thurston County.

On the women’s side, Alauna Carstens, also from The Evergreen State College, garnered the title of Collegiate Sports Star of the Year. Carstens’ impressive track record in track and field and cross country has earned her numerous conference and national accolades, including five-time NAIA All-American honors across various races. Her commitment to excellence continues to inspire younger athletes in the community.

The awards also honored high school athletes making waves in their respective sports. Andrew Coombs of Capital High School was recognized as the High School Sports Star of the Year for boys. Coombs set a state and meet record in the 200 Individual Medley at the 3A State Championships, having qualified for state in all eight individual events and breaking school records along the way. His achievements are a testament to the hard work and dedication that defines youth sports in the region.

For the girls’ category, Sadie McKune from North Thurston High School stood out as the High School Sports Star of the Year. Her accomplishments in gymnastics are remarkable, as she has clinched multiple league and district titles, received the WIAA Athlete of the Week honor, and earned a spot on the esteemed Senior Nationals Gymnastics Team. McKune is a prime example of the potential athletes have when they combine passion with effort.

Another significant moment was awarded to the South Puget Sound Community College Men’s Basketball Team, which earned the Sports Moment of the Year. The team made headlines with their first-ever appearance in the NWAC Final Four, achieving a commendable 25-7 overall record and excelling with a 12-2 record in conference play. Their journey serves as a source of pride for the local community.

John Lane, recognized as the Thurston County Sports Contributor of the Year, has been a vital figure in shaping athletics in Thurston County for decades. As a lifelong coach and mentor, Lane’s contributions at The Evergreen State College, particularly as the assistant women’s wrestling coach, highlight his commitment to guiding young athletes to achieve national honors. His impact on the community through sports is profound and enduring.

The Thurston County Sports Legend Award honored Bob Atwell, a coaching icon with over 40 years of experience at Timberline High School. Beyond just being a coach, Atwell has been a mentor and leader to generations of students and fellow coaches, exemplifying the values of sportsmanship and dedication. His legacy continues to influence many in the community, celebrated annually through the Atwell Classic track meet.

The evening was not only a celebration of athletic excellence but also a demonstration of community support that fuels these athletes’ successes. The Thurston County Sports Awards highlighted the outstanding achievements of those involved in the sports scene, inspiring younger generations to pursue their dreams in athletics.
