Maine’s economy encompasses traditionally hands-on industries such as lumber and salmon farming, which are now embracing AI technologies. “Those are spaces I wouldn’t have equated with AI,” Sentíes observed, but many companies are leveraging AI to enhance efficiency and productivity.

Chris Mallett, the chief administrative officer for Northeastern’s Portland campus, stated, “At the Roux Institute, we’re focused on being a catalyst for the economy of Maine. Enrique Bosh, the company’s director of corporate innovation, referred to the electric grid as “the biggest machine on Earth,” highlighting the engineering challenges in maintaining such an extensive infrastructure. Avangrid has rolled out numerous AI applications, including Geomesh—a platform combining weather predictions with grid data to forecast power outages, optimize maintenance efforts, and strategically position repair crews before storms hit.

It’s important to note that the drive for AI innovation is not limited to large corporations. Small businesses are also harnessing the power of AI to tackle specific challenges. For instance, Conductor AI, a software firm based in Biddeford, Maine, is working with government agencies to streamline the contracting process. By automating paperwork, they help their clients, which include the Air Force and Department of Justice, navigate bureaucratic hurdles more efficiently.

Co-founder Ben Fichter described Conductor AI’s approach, stating, “We take a maximalist approach to AI.” The company actively explores a variety of AI tools, showcasing their commitment to leveraging innovations in software development. One tool they have adopted, Code Rabbit, reviews code for bugs and quality, enabling faster delivery without compromising on oversight.
