Andy Pages is beating the odds again as Dodgers’ newest standout

ST. LOUIS — From the sun-soaked fields of western Cuba to the bright lights of Major League Baseball, Andy Pages has captured the hearts of fans and the attention of scouts. As he finds his footing in his second season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pages is not just defying the odds; he’s rewriting the narrative of his journey in the cutthroat world of professional sports.

Growing up in a country where resources for aspiring athletes were scarce, the young Pages turned to baseball, inspired by the homemade bats his father, Liban, crafted from leftover lumber. “When I started playing baseball in Cuba, it was tough; there were no bats,” Pages recalled. “My dad would always try to make me a bat so I could play. That motivated me.” His passion for the sport blossomed into a transformative journey, one that would ultimately take him far from home.

Entering the 2025 season, Pages was riding a wave of impressive performance, with a .288 batting average, 12 home runs, and 39 RBIs. His numbers put him in league with giants like Shohei Ohtani, showcasing his versatility not just as a power hitter but as a speedy baserunner with six stolen bases to boot. If Pages maintains this level of consistency, he stands a chance of becoming the first Dodger center fielder since Matt Kemp to exceed .250 batting with 23 homers—a feat not accomplished in over a decade.

Although Pages never set foot in Cuba’s elite Serie Nacional, his statistics in an under-15 league propelled him onto the radar of scouts, and he was tagged as one of the top prospects nationally. By age 16, Pages embarked on a daring journey to the Dominican Republic, navigating various countries and enduring significant hardships before signing with the Dodgers as an international free agent in March 2018. The contract represented more than just financial reward; it was a lifeline that forever altered the trajectory of his life, offering him a $300,000 bonus—more than 1,500 times the average annual salary in Cuba.

Progressing through the ranks, Pages reached Triple-A in the 2024 season. His stellar performance there, hitting .371, led to a swift call-up to the Dodgers, and he quickly became a World Series champion. However, success came at a price; Pages spent seven long years away from his family, only recently reuniting with them during a heartfelt trip back to Cuba.

Reflecting on his return, Pages shared the emotional weight of reconnecting with his family, especially after so much time apart. “It was emotional since I hadn’t seen them for a long time,” he said. The bond with his father, who had supported his dreams every step of the way, grew even deeper.

While Pages had his father’s unwavering support, he found additional mentorship in teammate Teoscar Hernández, a veteran who offered guidance during tough times. “Teoscar has been like a big brother,” Pages noted. The camaraderie has proven crucial, especially as Pages encountered the typical struggles of a young athlete transitioning to the big leagues. Hernández’s encouragement—be it discussing strategies or sharing light moments off the field—has played a significant role in Pages’s recent success.

In just a matter of weeks, Pages turned a rocky start to the season into a critical offensive streak, hitting in 13 out of 14 games. His confidence on the field has risen, showcased by hitting .379 and leading the Dodgers with 11 hits in the early stages of the current month. Hernández frequently emphasizes the importance of balancing the pressures of baseball with personal joy, advocating for outings with family and friends to unwind.

It’s worth noting that Pages isn’t just focused on his immediate game. He harbors aspirations to represent Cuba in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, proving that while he has pursued his dreams on foreign soil, his heart remains tied to his homeland. Bringing his family to the U.S. remains a dream, albeit complicated by recent immigration policies.

Amid the complexities of navigating MLB and personal life, Andy Pages exemplifies resilience. He has overcome significant odds to become a noteworthy player in the league. But with his sights firmly set on family reunification and personal excellence, he exemplifies the spirit of hope. “Hope is always there. You have to follow the rules, get the papers, do whatever it takes,” Pages said.

In a league where many players come and go, Pages’s journey is a testament to perseverance, talent, and heart. As he continues to develop as a player for the Dodgers, fans are reminded that sometimes the greatest victories are less about the stats and more about the personal battles fought along the way. Andy Pages has proven that despite life’s many challenges, triumph can emerge, illuminating the path for others to follow.
