5-minute STI test poised to transform sexual health diagnostics

Birmingham-based Linear Diagnostics is making headlines with an innovative approach to sexual health diagnostics. The company recently secured £1 million funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to finalize the development of a rapid test for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In collaboration with the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre and the North East Innovation Lab at Newcastle Hospitals, Linear Diagnostics is on a mission to tackle STIs, making the process more efficient and accessible for patients.

The focus of this groundbreaking initiative is the development of a low-cost, accurate, near-patient diagnostic platform capable of diagnosing infections from a single sample faster than any current commercially available alternatives. With the NIHR funding providing a substantial three-year package of work, Linear Diagnostics aims to culminate in the first clinical trials of this technology in a real-world setting.

At the heart of Linear’s offering is the Exponential Amplification (EXPAR) technology. This method, originally developed and tested during the COVID-19 pandemic, excels at detecting bacterial DNA with speed and accuracy. The results have been documented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, demonstrating that Linear’s technology can identify bacterial STIs, urinary tract infections, and even viral infections like SARS-CoV-2 in as little as five minutes.

The urgency of tackling STIs cannot be overstated, especially given the rise of multi-drug-resistant strains of infections like Neisseria gonorrhoeae. There is a clear need for rapid testing solutions that can stop the transmission cycle, allowing patients to receive diagnoses and commence treatment in a single clinic visit. Current testing methods, despite being user-friendly, fail to meet the 20-minute target from sample to results—yet Linear’s technology aims to exceed this benchmark significantly.

Funding from the NIHR will play a crucial role in finalizing both the cartridge and reader design for this rapid STI testing platform. Dr. Jean-Louis Duprey, Head of Research and Development at Linear Diagnostics, notes that achieving a balance of rapidity and accuracy in diagnostic testing has long been a challenging endeavor. While traditional rapid lateral flow tests can meet the rapidity requirement, they often fall short in sensitivity and specificity. Conversely, Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs) deliver high accuracy but require samples to be sent to laboratories, often resulting in delays of several days for results. Linear’s innovative near-patient device aims to overcome these limitations, providing immediate results without compromising on accuracy.

The backing of the NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation means that the evaluation process for this technology will be thorough. As Dr. Jana Suklan, a Senior Methodologist at the HRC, mentions, working closely with healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public will be crucial in tailoring the platform to better serve patient care. The research will focus on identifying unmet needs, examining current practices, and pinpointing where this technology can have the most significant impact on patient pathways.

To further bolster the development and evaluation process, John Tyson, Head of the North East Innovation Lab, emphasizes the importance of collaboration. By providing access to a wide variety of clinical samples and NHS lab performance testing, the Innovation Lab will play a vital role in generating evidence needed for the next stages of technology development.

As the world continues to grapple with the persistence of STIs and the threat of multi-drug resistance, Linear Diagnostics’ near-patient diagnostic platform represents a beacon of hope in sexual health diagnostics. It promises not just speed, but also the improved accuracy necessary for effective treatment and control of infections. These innovations are not merely about technology; they can fundamentally change how healthcare providers approach STI testing and management—leading to earlier diagnoses, better treatment outcomes, and healthier communities.

In the coming years, we may witness significant advancements in sexual health diagnostics, thanks to efforts like those of Linear Diagnostics and its partners. As they finalize their five-minute STI test, the healthcare landscape could change in ways that empower patients and healthcare professionals alike. Rapid, reliable, and accessible testing for STIs could become the new standard of care, further underscoring the importance of innovation in medical technology.

As awareness of sexual health issues grows, the demand for efficient testing solutions is likely to increase as well. Linear Diagnostics is poised to answer that call by addressing the critical gaps in current diagnostic practices. The implications of their work extend beyond technology; they touch on the broader societal need for accessible healthcare solutions that prioritize patient welfare—an essential goal in today’s ever-evolving medical landscape.

This promising development sets a new precedent for how sexually transmitted infections can be managed in both clinical settings and the broader public health arena. With rigorous evaluation and a focus on user-centered design, Linear Diagnostics aims not just to meet market needs but to enhance overall health outcomes for individuals and communities alike. The next few years may very well define a new era in STI diagnostics—one that prioritizes speed, accuracy, and patient-focused care.
